What to do for Common Dental Emergencies

If you or someone is suffering a dental emergency, you must act quickly to decrease pain, prevent complications, and save the affected tooth.

Cracked tooth

A cracked tooth is a dental emergency. If you think you have cracked a tooth, rinse with warm water to clean your mouth. Hold a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Use anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, to control pain and swelling. Make an appointment as soon as possible; avoid eating hard or sticky foods until you have seen your dentist.

Chipped or broken tooth

If you have a chipped or broken tooth, try to gather up the pieces of the tooth and take them to the dentist for repair. Use ice to control pain and swelling. Ibuprofen can also help control pain and swelling; do not use aspirin, as it can make it hard to stop bleeding. To reduce the risk of further breakage, avoid eating hard or crunchy food until you see your dentist. Do not chew on ice or other hard objects.

Knocked-out teeth

If some sort of trauma to your face or mouth has knocked a tooth completely out of its socket, call us immediately at (919) 846-9070 – we may be able to put your tooth back into its socket.

Collect the tooth, if possible. Never touch the tooth by its root; instead, grab the tooth by the chewing surface area. The root contains important fibers that are necessary for healing.

Briefly rinse the tooth in water and remove any visible dirt, but do not scrub the tooth. Try putting the tooth back in its socket, but do not force the tooth.

Do not let the tooth dry out. While en route to your dentist, put the tooth in milk; do not put the tooth in water. If you do not have access to milk, put the tooth in your mouth next to your teeth to keep the root moist.

Loosened or out-of-position tooth

If you have knocked your tooth out of position, try to push it back into position. Be gentle, though, as you do not want to damage the tooth, gums or socket.

Jaw pain

A variety of things can cause jaw pain – tooth problems, temporomandibular joint and muscle disorder (TMD), sinus infections, and many other conditions can cause your jaw to hurt. When jaw pain is severe enough to prevent you from eating or sleeping, you require emergency dental care. Your dentist can diagnose the underlying cause of your jaw pain, and prescribe treatment to alleviate your discomfort.

Apply moist heat or ice packs to control pain. Use ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain.

Severe emergencies

The most severe emergencies may require attention from a hospital or physician. If you have a serious dental infection, swelling, fever or severe bleeding, call 911 right away.
